Everyman Rep Brings Laughs and Tears with ‘The Father’

October 28, 2024

Everyman Repertory Theatre returns with their first full stage production since the pandemic with the tragic farce ‘The Father’ by Florian Zeller. After many staged readings and recordings in the midcoast area in recent years, they are excited to one again take to the stage of the Camden Opera House with this award-winning play.

Premiering in Paris in 2012, it won the Moliere Award for Best Play in 2014, and was considered “the most acclaimed new play of the last decade.” Receiving many awards and nominations, London newspaper The Guardian called it the best play of the year and said it was ‘a savagely honest study of dementia.’

It was adapted very shortly after into the French film ‘Floride’ in 2015 and in 2020, Zeller directed ‘The Father’ starring Anthony Hopkins as Andre and Olivia Colman as Anne, of which the film and Hopkins won Academy Awards.

Now 70 years old, André was once a tap dancer. He lives with his daughter, Anne, and her husband, Antoine. Or was André an engineer, whose daughter Anne lives in London with her new lover, Pierre? The thing is, he is still wearing his pajamas, and he can’t find his watch. He is starting to wonder if he’s losing control. What is all this nonsense? Florian Zeller’s award-winning tragic farce about dementia makes its Maine debut; it’s a beautifully written play that has the audience laughing one minute and crying the next — and has it as confused as André. Truly, a play for our time.

Cast includes Paul Hodgson, Jennifer Hodgson, Ryan Jackson, Laura Houck, Arla Gray, and Michael Amico. Production staff includes Director James Hoban, Stage Manager Mary Ann Giasson, Set Design by Dan Dalrymple, Set Design & Construction by Christopher Moore, Costume Design by Michelle Handley, Lighting by Michaela Wirth, and Production Assistance by Carole Leporati.

The Father can be seen at Camden Opera House November 1, 2, 8, 9 at 7pm, 3 and 10 at 2:30pm. For tickets, visit camdenoperahouse.com.
