Machias Savings Bank

January 1, 2020

Machias Savings Bank is first and foremost a community-based bank. And quite frankly, you can’t take the community out of what we do. Founded in 1869, our business has depended on individuals and organizations working together to build sustainable and thriving communities across Maine. By putting individuals in their first homes, lending to businesses, and keeping a watchful eye on savings, we’ve helped to enhance the places we call home each and every day.

Today, with over $2.3 billion in assets, 300 employees, and 15 branches from Portland to Caribou, we are more committed than ever to move Maine forward through financial health, one person, one business, and one community at a time.

Working Together.

Thriving communities are created when everyone lends a helping hand, and we’re consistently working toward that. We are incredibly proud of our Hours for Ours program, which empowers each of our employees with 20 hours of volunteer time annually. In 2022 we more than doubled the national average of volunteer engagement with over 86% of our employees giving back to our communities.

We said YES to supporting organizations across the state that focus on workforce development, youth and education, financial health, and economic development. Our employees donated over 10,000 volunteer hours and collectively we supported 435 organizations in Maine.

Giving Back.

In 2022, we continued our commitment to investing in financial health. We tackled the issues that matter most to the communities we serve – education, workforce, childcare, and small business development. We were the first to stand with Maine Lobsterman in their fight against regulations that threatened their livelihood, and one of our state’s core industries. And for the third year in a row, we said YES to Maine’s future and invested over $1 million dollars in organizations around the state.

At the heart of everything we do is the belief that together we can have a positive and lasting impact on the welfare of our communities. Central to that belief is the work we do in providing opportunities to those less fortunate. Machias Savings Bank works diligently to advance affordable housing, promote job creation, provide community service, and stimulate economic development in low-to-moderate-income areas.

Our community involvement and employee engagement are key reasons why we’ve been voted as one of the Best Places to Work in Maine and named one of the Best Banks to Work in the US by American Bankers Magazine.
