Movies: How Some Famous Filmmakers Got Their Start with Low- or No-Budget Movies
A six-week exploration of the demanding, chaotic, and epic world of low-budget filmmaking in 1980s and 1990s New York City. Instructor/producer James Bradney was part of that vibrant, independent film scene and movies known for innovative storytelling, unique visual styles, and often featuring unknown actors. Featured filmmakers: Darren Aronofsky, Luc Besson, Noah Baumbach, Jim Jarmusch, Charlie Kaufman, Spike Lee, Richard Linklater, Christopher Nolan, David O. Russell, John Sayles, Whit Stillman, and more. Film highlights will be shown in class with a possible option of access to streaming service links to view full movies at home. Class starts Wednesday, November 6, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Course fee $75.
Calendula Salve and Lip Balm from Fresh Flowers
Learn to harvest calendula flowers to make salve and lip balm. In this one-night session, Monday, November 4, 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. You will leave class with one tin of salve and two lip balms. Course fee $35, plus a $20 materials fee to be paid to the instructor.
Chaga, the Famous Medicinal Mushroom
Chaga, a fungus that grows mainly on the bark of birch trees in cold climates, has been used in traditional Northern European and Asian medicines for centuries, mainly to boost immunity and overall health. In this one-night class on Tuesday, November 5, 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, we will explore all aspects of chaga from finding and harvesting it to the microscopic level of its many uses, as well as its myths and miscellany. Course fee $29.
This morning class for artists of all levels offers six-weeks’ relaxed, supportive, and energizing exploration of the rich medium of drawing. At the initial meeting, the group will determine together the direction of our focus. The instructor will provide resources and offer demos based on the interests of the group. Participants are expected to bring work in progress to share and continue. Class starts Tuesday, November 6, 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM through December 10. Course fee $89.
